Possible Street Art Idea

I wonder if this would work as a street art idea. The concept is non-smoking or at least contemplating your lungs as living breathing things. It would be interesting to work on this and talk to people about what it might mean while working. That's a nice thing about doing public art.

On March 6th I was snapped by this photographer starting my 4x4 square with other artists in Glendale. It's actually an event sponsored by the Scottsdale Airpark Rotary, but they held it on the street by Glendale's Murphy Park. Then we were rained out the second day. Pictures of the event to follow...eventually.
My gratitude to this photographer for the photo. Now I see why I hurt so badly for two entire days afterwards. Oh, those achey muscles!

This year I had little time to prepare for the street painting, and enjoyed it very much. Maybe I should stress less and enjoy it more. Here is one of the photos taken by a passing photographer - with a fisheye lense no less. No, mine isn't the one with the cat: it is the Buddha with flower to its right. More about this later.

I would probably never do "Star Trek on the Street", but last night sketched this from a paused DVD of Deep Space Nine. It was fun and good practice balancing out moving from black to light and creating brights. Well ... I should never say never. It might be fun to do street art for a big Star Trek convention somewhere. It would be weird and funky and...fun.
I heard from the Via Colori festival last night, confirming my registration for March 6-7th in Glendale. This year I signed up for a 4 x 4 foot square instead of the bigger 6 x 6 one. I hope I don't regret it, but working smaller may give me more leisure to enjoy the process.

Old Book Cover Simulates Asphalt

These are tests in Prismacolor pencil on black to simulate chalk on asphalt. I am using recycled book covers which are often black, made to simulate old fabric covers.  They are sturdy and easy to display and the black texture is a bit like asphalt.  I found you can correct your errors with solvent to re-work areas. In the  drawing above, I got a nice gauzy effect in one spot. It seems to work best with a bold treatment. This year at the Streetpainting Festival, I plan to leave the black areas black and not overwork things. If you work from light to dark there is less danger of things getting muddy.
The other good surface to simulate asphalt is roofing paper. I have a big, old roll out on the patio. And there are a couple of lovely chiaroscuro drawings I want to copy as practice. And nothing can equal Michael Newberry's tutorials for getting insight into pastel on dark.
